Jim’s council work has included responsibilities involving the Fire Department and Sheriff’s Department. His record shows a practical approach: support the people and equipment needed to respond effectively, but ask for clear information about cost, use, service levels, and results.

Fire Equipment: Understand the Need Before Approving the Purchase

January 23, 2023. While council reviewed grant-supported fire equipment, Jim asked how often proposed equipment was used, whether older equipment could be sold, whether multiple estimates were available, and what the city’s matching obligation would be. After staff explained the operational need and grant structure, the purchase moved forward.

Follow the Operating Costs

October–November 2023. Jim questioned Fire Department expenditures including pension-related payments, pump testing, communication charges, emergency-notification costs, and other operating expenses. The goal was not to reduce readiness, but to understand what the city was paying for and why.

Ask for Local Law-Enforcement Data

January 22, 2024. During the Sheriff’s year-end presentation, Jim asked how many calls the Sheriff’s Office had handled at Nexus and requested that location-specific information be provided afterward. That reflects a broader interest in understanding where law-enforcement resources are being used and what East Bethel is receiving from contracted service.

Neighborhood-Level Concerns

January 2026. During a Sheriff’s report, Jim raised a resident-level concern about suspicious solicitation and private-driveway activity and asked how residents should respond. The exchange reinforced the importance of neighborhood-facing public safety, not just regional enforcement activity.
